The OSHA 180-Day Cap on Days Away and Restricted

Count calendar days

Days away and days of restricted work or job transfer are counted in calendar days, not workdays — weekends and holidays included — starting the day after the injury (1904.7(b)(3) and (b)(4)). If someone is still out when the log is due, enter an estimate and update it later.

The cap

You may cap the total at 180 calendar days. If a case goes past 180 days away and/or restricted, entering 180 is enough (1904.7(b)(3)(vii)).

How Safetally applies it

Safetally records the days you enter. Tick “Cap days away + restricted at 180 per case” in the settings and any case over 180 is limited to 180 days in total — days away first, then restricted days up to what's left. The 300A day totals K and L, and the ITA dafw and djtr columns, then use the capped figures.

Last reviewed 2026-10-27. General information, not legal advice — 29 CFR Part 1904 and OSHA's own guidance decide what applies.
